Education Ministry: Replacing examination system, PT3 focus on student’s critical thinking

Petaling Jaya, 15 May 2017 - Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid stated that our country is moving from exam-oriented education to producing a well-balanced and holistic nation as well as paying close attention in student’s critical thinking skill.

He stated the whole new PT3 (Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3) served as student’s evaluation system to enable student in practicing higher order thinking skill (HOTS) during examination. This could also be a good foundation for our education system.

School should improve teaching staff’s skill

During his speech on the opening ceremony of St Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid mentioned that regardless of private or government school, apart from the fundamental facilities, a school should improve teacher’s teaching skill in order to provide quality education to students.

He said St Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia is the first private school in this country to practice Lasallian holistic education. Currently, there are a total of 40 Lasallian government schools.

He added, the school begins its first intake in last year August and up to date there are 500 students. He also complimented on the complete facilities and excellent teaching staff in this school.

Aside that, regarding the report of case of a teacher arrested for allegedly molesting six students at a religious school in Bandar Baru Bangi, he said, it is out of the jurisdiction of his ministry. Hence he gave no comments on the case as it had passed to police department for further investigation.

Among those who attended the ceremony are Brother Edmundo Fernandez, Brother Visitor of the Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD), Tropicana Corp. Bhd. Founder and Advisor, Tan Sri Danny Tan Chee Sing, his third son Dion Tan Yong Chien and Tropicana Corp. Bhd. Chief Executive Office Datuk Yau Kok Seng.
