Janice Wan
At 51, Janice Wan exemplifies resilience and determination. As a personal assistant to Jared Ang of Tropicana Corporation Berhad, her demanding job is complemented by her remarkable journey as a triathlete. Her story of overcoming adversity is highlighted by her return to racing in the Ironman 70.3 Vietnam on May 12, 2024, after a severe accident a year prior.

On May 4, 2023, Janice collided with a car while training, resulting in three fractured ribs and a broken clavicle. Despite a predicted year-long recovery, she pushed through immense physical and mental trauma, gradually regaining her strength. The Vietnam triathlon marked her comeback, where she finished in 5 hours and 48 minutes, embodying the triathlete slogan, “If you never tri, you’ll never know.”

Hailing from Perak, Janice began her triathlon journey in 2018, evolving from a runner to a full-fledged triathlete. Her longest bike run was an impressive 600 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur to Terengganu. Her brother, a fellow athlete, inspired her competitive spirit. Despite starting late, she quickly rose through the ranks, often placing in the top 10 in her age group. Her ultimate goal is to achieve All World Athlete (AWA) recognition.

Janice trains seven days a week, following a structured program that increases to 14 - 15 hours per week during race season. Her regimen includes morning swims, followed by work, and evening cycling or running sessions. An online coach provides accountability and structure. Diet is also crucial, with carb-loading periods to boost energy before competitions.

Her fellow triathletes are her biggest supporters, always encouraging her. While her family initially struggled to understand her commitment, they now proudly acknowledge her accomplishments. Janice advises aspiring athletes to follow a realistic training schedule that allows for progressive improvement.

Janice’s story is an inspiration, demonstrating that with dedication, preparation, and a positive outlook, no obstacle is insurmountable.
